Australian author, philosopher, and ethicist. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to Austrian parents fleeing Nazi persecution of Jews, Singer was educated at Melbourne University and at England's Oxford University. Throughout his subsequent academic career, during which he has held professorships in England, Australia, and the United States, Singer has generated controversy and even outrage for his application of utilitarianism-"the greatest good of the greatest number"-to a wide variety of ethical issues, ranging from euthanasia and abortion to economic justice and animal rights. A prolific author, Singer's principal works include Animal Liberation (1975), Practical Ethics (1979), and Rethinking Life and Death (1994).
