American novelist and essayist. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Hawaii, where her parents were professors at the University of Hawaii, Goodman earned her A.B. at Harvard University and her Ph.D. in English at Stanford University. She launched her career in fiction with two short story collections, Total Immersion (1989) and The Family Markowitz (1996); since then she has published a string of warmly received novels that depict the manners and mores of contemporary Jewish American life, from Kaaterskill Falls (1998) to The Cookbook Collector (2010).
