Understanding Comics
Scott McCloud
...Indeed, words and pictures have great powers to tell stories when creators fully exploit them both… In comics at its best, words and pictures are like partners in a dance and each one takes turns leading....
American cartoonist and comics theorist. McCloud was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and earned a B.F.A. in illustration at Syracuse University. The creator of the science fiction/superhero comic book series Zot!, McCloud has also done the artwork for many issues of Superman as well as his own Destroy!!, which he describes as "a deliberately over-the-top, oversized single-issue comic book, intended as a parody of formulaic superhero fights," and the graphic novel The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln (1998). In 1993, he published Understanding Comics, a scholarly work on the definition, history, and methodology of comics, done entirely in comics form. He followed this study with Reinventing Comics (2000) and Making Comics (2006). See also scottmcloud.com.
