9.11.01: The Skyscraper and the Airplane
Adam Goodheart
...Before the fire, before the ash, before the bodies tumbling solitary through space, one thin skin of metal and glass met another. Miles apart only moments before, then feet, and then, in an almost inconceivable instant, only a fraction of an inch. Try to imagine them there, suspended: two manmade behemoths joined in a fatal kiss....

American historian and essayist. Born in Philadelphia, Goodheart received an A.B. in American history at Harvard University in 1992. Goodheart's book reviews, travel articles, and essays on culture have appeared in many publications, including the Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic, the New York Times, Outside, and Salon.com. He was a founding editor of Civilization magazine and is a member of the editorial board of the American Scholar. In 2006 Washington College named Goodheart the new director of the C. V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. See also history.washcoll.edu.
